SCENIC RIM
Kooralbyn Koala Drone SurveysWatergum is delivering thermal drone surveys across 150 hectares of koala habitat in Kooralbyn, helping to safeguard one of Australia’s most iconic species.
Using advanced thermal imaging technology and AI analysis of drone data, this project enables us to detect and monitor koalas in a non-invasive, highly effective way, even in dense bushland and hard-to-access terrain. By capturing accurate data without disturbing wildlife, we can better understand where koalas live, how they move and how they use the landscape.
The information gathered will provide critical insights into population distribution, vegetation analysis and movement patterns across the surveyed area. These findings will directly inform local conservation planning, strengthen collaboration with landholders, and guide future habitat restoration efforts throughout the Scenic Rim.
By combining innovative technology with community-driven conservation, Watergum is enhancing our capacity to protect vulnerable koala populations and support evidence-based management of this vital habitat.
Following completion of the surveys, results will be shared with Scenic Rim Regional Council, local landholders, and conservation partners to help guide informed, strategic habitat management decisions for the region’s future.
