Feral Deer Field Work

June 11, 2022 at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us in the field to learn how to recognise deer damage in the environment and how to conduct your own deer monitoring

Although seldom seen, feral deer populations are increasing in the Gold Coast region and so is the extent of their damage to natural areas.

With help from the community, we can get a better understanding of which areas are being most impacted by feral deer.

This friendly morning session will teach you how to recognise evidence of feral deer in the environment and how to conduct your own monitoring in your local area.

Itinerary

9:00am – 9:30am – Introduction to feral deer and how to monitor feral deer yourselves

9:30am-10:15am – Guided walk to learn how to recognise evidence of feral deer and how to log your route and observations

10:15am – 10:45am – Morning Tea

10:45am – 11:30am – A chance to put your skills to the test, conduct your own Deer Walk and log your route and observations

11:30 – 12:00am – Regroup and compare our findings

We will also have Jacob White, one of our BioBlitz survey leaders along for the morning to conduct a botany survey of the area, which anyone is welcome to join. This vegetation assessment will help us to understand how deer are impacting local biodiversity.
