Jenna Versluis at Mon Repos relocation training

Get more staff certified to relocate sea turtles eggs.

Each summer, endangered Loggerhead and Green Sea Turtles return to the Gold Coast to nest, but their survival becomes more challenging.

Many Gold Coast dunes were recently destroyed from Ex-Cyclone Alfred, removing vital nesting habitat. This destruction means sea turtles that choose to lay their eggs this year will have to do so closer to the tide line where their eggs are far more vulnerable to inundation and humane interference. Without interventions, nests could be destroyed.

There are only three accredited officers across the entire Gold Coast who can safely relocate turtle nests. Watergum is in urgent need of funding to train and deploy additional accredited officers so that every nest laid in unprotected areas has the best possible chance of survival.

We’re aiming to raise $30,000 to train, equip and support additional accredited staff this season. Your contribution will also support our on-ground efforts to train volunteers in turtle-track identification, as well as assist staff with nest relocations and ensuring hatchlings make it safely to the water.

All donations made go to Watergum Community Inc. Gift Fund. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.
