Great Cane Toad Busting - community cane toad control

What is the Great Cane Toad Bust?

The Great Cane Toad Bust is Australia’s biggest cane toad control event, changing the game for Cane Toad control!

Every year, Cane Toads (Rhinella marina) wreak havoc on Australian native wildlife, poison thousands of pets and even impact local agriculture.

Cane Toads can live for more than 10 years, and females can produce up to 35,000 eggs each time she breeds.  This means that every Cane Toad removed really does count!

This event is action packed, fun and can have a huge impact on Cane Toad numbers.

Getting involved is easy! Just follow these three steps:

  1. Get ready for the bust!
You can join in the Great Cane Toad Bust on your own, or by teaming up with friends, family and neighbours! There are also community events running Australia wide – check out the map below to find one near you!
  2. Tackle your property and local area
Get out toad busting and tadpole trapping for the most effective Cane Toad control!
  3. Humanely euthanise your Cane Toads
Follow our guide to humane euthanasia. Make sure to dispose of your Cane Toads – they are still toxic two weeks after death if left in the environment!

Tadpole trap by day…

Did you know Cane Toad are prolific breeders? Effective Cane Toad control starts at the tadpole stage.

Each female can produce up to 35,000 eggs each time she reproduces – that’s 35x the rate of a Green Tree Frog.

Trapping tadpoles allows you to break the Cane Toad breeding cycle and remove young cane toads before they grow up to cause damage.

During the day, check your ponds, dams and local waterways for Cane Toad tadpoles. If you find any – get trapping! These numbers count towards your Great Cane Toad Bust totals.

And toad bust by night!

Toad busting is the removal of adult Cane Toads. This fun, action packed activity makes a huge difference for your local wildlife, pets and livestock.

Each night during the Great Cane Toad Bust, head out after dark and collect as many toads as you can. Be sure to count your catch and submit your data to enter the running!

Each Cane Toad can live happily for more than 10 years in the wild, and the older they are the more toxic they become.

Capturing an adult Cane Toad, particularly female toads, has a huge benefit to the environment. Make sure you brush up on your Cane Toad ID before heading out toad busting!
