SUMMARY:Cane Toad Busting
DESCRIPTION:Impact cane toads through toad-busting! Learn everything you need to know about cane toads and how get rid of them in your own backyard.\n\n\nBring the family along to learn about these pests and their impact on native wildlife and compete for prizes! \nParticipants will be introduced to a revolutionary new method of cane toad control that uses the toad’s own toxins against them. Lures made from toxic cane toad glands tempt tadpoles into traps that can catch upwards of 4000 in one go! \nIn 1935\, 102 cane toads were brought to Queensland in an attempt to control cane beetles which were decimating crops. The toads proved completely ineffective at controlling cane beetles but their enormous appetites and staggering breeding capabilities (females cane produce up to 70\,000 eggs a year!) meant they quickly monopolised habitat and food resources to the detriment of native species. They are now well established in 4 states and their numbers exceed 2 billion. \nCane toads present a serious threat to native species and to pets and it is important that we band together as a community and start impacting cane toads before they spread any further. \nLogan has partnered up with Watergum so we can play our part in reducing cane toad numbers and provide a safer environment for our native species. Come along to make a difference! \nPlease bring a bucket (ideally with a lid)\, enclosed shoes\, rubber gloves\, torch\, and if you have one/want one\, a litter picker. \nThe event will be outdoors after dark so dress for the conditions and be aware of your surroundings. Very young children may not be suited to the activities. \nPlease ensure you are signed in and present by 5.30 pm. \nAges: Family friendly \nThe workshop is delivered by Watergum as part of the City of Logan’s Environmental Events and Activities Program and citizen science initiatives. \nPlease visit logan.qld.gov.au/environmentalevents for a complete listing of all environmental events and activities run by Logan City Council. \nDue to COVID-19\, for the safety of event attendees\, if you fall into any of the below categories please do not attend the event if : \n\nyou have been overseas in the last 14 days prior to the event\,\nunwell or have a cough\, fever\, sore throat\, fatigue or shortness of breath\,\nyou have been in close contact with a person who is positive for COVID-19.\n\nPlease maintain 1.5 metres physical distancing during the event.

SUMMARY:Watergum Community Cane Toad Busting - Tweed POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:Watergum Community Cane Toad Busting – Tweed Shire\n\n\nCome along and work together with your community to control cane toads! \nWe know times for many have been very tough lately for the Tweed Shire community and everyone’s been working hard to clean up and get back on their feet. \nIf you’re looking for an activity to take a break and spend an hour or two in the environment and connect with like minded people then you’re invited to come along to our next cane toad busting session on Thursday March 24th. \nCane toad numbers have exploded with the influx of waterbodies and they are still breeding rapidly during the end of this toad season. Many of our native wildlife have been displaced from the recent events and we can give them a helping hand by removing cane toads from the environment. \nThis session will be taking place in Tweed Heads West\, the location will be sent to you in the reminder emails once you register your place. \nWe will welcome you with an educational session that covers everything you need to know about cane toads. Then we will split into groups and compete to clear the area of cane toads. \nOnce you are back we will count all the toads and a prize will be giving to the group who collects the most! \nThis is a great activity for the whole family. The skills you acquire can be put into use on your own properties\, reclaim your gardens from cane toads! \nSome equipment is provided but we suggest you bring your own bucket with a lid\, gloves\, torch and pick-up stick (optional). Please wear enclosed shoes as this is an outdoor event. \nSo come along to this toad busting session if you’d like to take a break in the environment during this stressful time. \nLet’s make a difference\, let’s impact cane toads! \nPlease ensure that you are aware of current Covid-19 restrictions and if you feel unwell\, please cancel your registration and stay at home. \nFor more information contact canetoads@watergum.org
