SUMMARY:Cane Toad Tadpole Trapping & Information Session
DESCRIPTION:Impact cane toads through tadpole trapping and toad-busting!\n\n\nThis short session will teach you everything you need to know about cane toads\, tadpole trapping and more. \nResidents of the City of Logan who attend and have a dam/waterbody on their property may be eligible to join our citizen science trial to monitor how well the cane toad tadpole traps work. \nWe want to introduce you to a revolutionary new method of cane toad control that uses the toad’s own toxins against them. Lures made from toxic cane toad glands tempt tadpoles into traps that can catch upwards of 4\,000 in one go! \nIn 1935\, 102 cane toads were brought to Queensland in an attempt to control cane beetles which were decimating crops. The toads proved completely ineffective at controlling cane beetles but their enormous appetites and staggering breeding capabilities (females cane produce up to 70\,000 eggs a year!) meant they quickly monopolised habitat and food resources to the detriment of native species. \nCane toads are now well established in 4 states and their numbers exceed 2 billion. \nCane toads present a serious threat to native species and to pets and it is important that we band together as a community and start impacting cane toads before they spread any further. \nLogan City Council has partnered with Watergum to play our part in reducing cane toad numbers and provide a safer environment for our native species. \nWatergum will be running the first Cane Toad info evening on Tuesday 16 November in Kingston. This event will be an information night and traps will be distributed to property owners who live in Logan. For further information please visit watergum.org/canetoads/ \nPlease ensure you are signed in and present by 6.30 pm. \nAges: Family friendly \nThe workshop is delivered by Watergum as part of the City of Logan’s Environmental Events and Activities Program and citizen science initiatives. Please visit logan.qld.gov.au/environmentalevents for a complete listing of all environmental events and activities run by Logan City Council. \nDue to COVID-19\, for the safety of event attendees\, if you fall into any of the below categories please do not attend the event if : \n\nyou have been overseas in the last 14 days prior to the event\,\nunwell or have a cough\, fever\, sore throat\, fatigue or shortness of breath\,\nyou have been in close contact with a person who is positive for COVID-19.\n\nPlease maintain 1.5 metres physical distancing during the event.
