SUMMARY:NaturallyGC Hotel for Frogs (kids workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Join our free NaturallyGC workshop\n\n\nThis is a kids workshop suitable for ages 6 to 15. \nNative frogs are a favourite visitor of Australian gardens and come in many different shapes and sizes. Australia hosts 240 species of native frogs with 39 of them calling the Gold Coast home! It doesn’t matter where you are on the Gold Coast or how big your outdoor space is\, you will surely have frogs lurking nearby. Native frogs need our help as they are struggling to find suitable habitat to live and breed. Urban development has greatly reduced their habitat and what is left is often taken over by cane toads. This workshop includes an introductory presentation that will help you to identify your hopping friends and learn all about their specific needs followed by a ‘How to build your own frog hotel’ activity!   \nPlease note you won’t be making you’re own frog hotel to take home with you\, we will create one together which will stay at the gardens. \n Bookings are required for further details. \nBook a spot for all children and adults attending \nPresented by Watergum.

SUMMARY:Water Quality - Coomera
DESCRIPTION:Water Quality Survey\n\n\nLearn how to assess the health of our waterways through water quality sampling! \nHelp the team collect readings using our state of the art equipment. The Water Quality program collects monthly readings at select locations in order to assess the changing quality of our waterways throughout the year. We also rely on our volunteers to record observational details that could have an effect on the water quality reading such as current and recent weather conditions\, visible rubbish and pollution\, weeds\, site usage or disturbance\, and wildlife sightings. \nThe data collected is shared with local councils and highlights those areas where action needs to be taken! If you are passionate about the environment and keen to contribute to its preservation\, we encourage you to come along and meet like-minded people while learning new skills and collecting vital data! \nWe are heading out to our Northern sites with the Coomera River Catchment Group! Meeting time will be at 09:00 AM. \n What to bring \nGum boots/water shoes. No one will be permitted to enter the water without shoes due to safety concerns. \nSun protection: Natural non-polluting sunscreen\, wide-brimmed hat\, long sleeves \nTowel \nLots of drinking water \nGlasses/contact lenses \nPen/pencil \nPlease make sure to register to get all the updates! \nThis event is a collaborative effort between Watergum\, Gecko and Coomera River Catchment Group and is supported by City of Gold Coast

SUMMARY:Gecko Talks: The Iconic Platypus
DESCRIPTION:The Iconic Platypus -Emily Vincent from Watergum speaks at Gecko Talks on 24th March\n\n\nThe iconic platypus will be the topic of the next Gecko Talks\, held as usual at Currumbin RSL. “The platypus is one of the most unique species in the world\,” says Emily Vincent of environmental organisation Watergum\, who will be Gecko’s guest speaker. The egg-laying mammal is endemic to the east coast of Australia\, including Tasmania\, populating our freshwater creeks and waterways. The platypus looks like a cross between a duck\, an otter and a beaver and it has some unique features\, like an electro sensory system in their bill that tells them what’s in the water. Emily is a coordinator for Watergum’s PlatypusWatch\, a citizen science surveying program that’s been operating for 12 years on the Gold Coast. During her talk Emily will reveal not so known details of the animal’s biology\, lifestyle and habitat as well as introducing you to the PlatypusWatch program.\n \n“We are concerned that the platypus is quietly disappearing and so it is important to monitor our local populations. We have already seen them disappear from one of the Gold Coast’s waterways and we want to prevent this from happening anywhere else.”\n \nWatergum is welcoming people from the public to come forward to become a surveyor for PlatypusWatch. “At present the platypus’ conservation status is not regarded as concerning in Queensland. Together with the community\, this is something we are working to change \,” Emily adds.
