SUMMARY:PlatypusWatch
DESCRIPTION:PlatypusWatch needs your help to learn more about where platypus live and where they are disappearing. PlatypusWatch is a community-based program and involves members of the community undertaking platypus surveys\, promoting and recording platypus sightings and assessing platypus habitats. This information is used to identify what education and conservation actions are needed to help protect this mammal. \nThe platypus is an amazing semi-aquatic mammal that is endemic to Eastern Australia and Tasmania. It is primarily nocturnal\, living in creeks and rivers from cold highlands areas to tropical rainforests. Unfortunately platypus numbers appear to be declining due to habitat disruption\, water extraction\, pollution of waterways and illegal capture. \nJoin us on our Surveys in March and April 2019 where we hopefully see some youngsters explore our waterways. \nMake sure to email us on gcplatypus@gmail.com to register and get all the information for our surveys as well as the compulsory induction!

SUMMARY:Austinville Landcare Group
DESCRIPTION:The Austinville Landcare Group was established in November 2005 and is partnered with the Natural Areas Management Unit under the Beaches to Bushland\, Volunteer Landcare Program. The group assists with the restoration of City-managed Austinville Community Park and Austinville Conservation Area along the upper reaches of Mudgeeraba Creek. The group’s activities consist of environmental weed control and planting native riparian species where required. \nThe Austinville Valley is located between Mudgeeraba and Springbrook and was previously known for banana farming but is now known for its beautiful rainforests and stunning creek lines.  The group’s main focus is on the riparian areas along Mudgeeraba Creek with activities including weed control and revegetation where required. \nThe vegetation along these sections of Mudgeeraba Creek is classed as Regional Ecosystem type 12.3.2. This vegetation type is characterised by the presence of the canopy tree\, Flooded Gum. This ‘of concern’ community is found in alluvial flats amongst hilly terrain\, in the southern half of the city where there is more rainfall. \nWorking bees are on the last Sunday of the month from February to November. \nTime: 8am – 10am\nPlace: Austinville Conservation Area\, 621 Austinville Road and Austinville Community Park\, Staghorn Drive. Please call to prior to confirm location.\nWhat to bring: Sturdy shoes\, long sleeve shirt\, pants\, sunscreen\, hat and some water. Gloves are compulsory. \nFor more information\, please contact the Natural Areas Management Unit on 07 5581 1537 or namu@goldcoast.qld.gov.au

SUMMARY:Tamborine Mountain Landcare
DESCRIPTION:Here’s a great opportunity to do yourself and the local environment a favour with a pleasant morning’s activity! \n \nDate: Saturday 30th March\nTime: 8.30 – 11am\nLocation: 80 The Shelf Road\n\nPlease wear enclosed footwear\, sun protection.\nMorning tea is provided; bring your own drinking water.\n\nDo come along – and maybe bring your family and neighbours? –  to this family-friendly tree planting. The area is at the entrance to the reserve\, at the top of the site\, has easy access\, flat terrain and is close to the road.\n\nThis planting is part of Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Active and Healthy program\, which organises a range of activities throughout the region. TM Landcare regularly hosts planting days\, and now we’re partnering with Council to organise this event at The Shelf Road site on 30th March. \nThe Shelf Project is a collaboration between Energex\, TM Landcare and Scenic Rim Regional Council. Works commenced in 2015 to revegetate 11ha at the Council Environmental Reserve on the eastern side of The Shelf Road. It is designed to improve the natural values of the property and to offset Energex’s vegetation clearing for essential electrical infrastructure in the region. Landscape Conservation (Land Management Contractors) are the project managers. \nThe project will be completed by June 2019. During the three years of its development\, the contractors have controlled invasive weeds and planted over 8000 native tubestock. Across the whole site\, the young trees are already showing good growth.  At the conclusion of the project the maintenance of the site will be handed back to Council and will become a public asset. \nA community planting day\, held on the site in 2016 for the local residents\, was very well attended. The upcoming final planting will add to the already significant outcomes of that day’s work\, will conclude the current work by Energex and “put the feather in the cap” of this lovely site.

SUMMARY:Numinbah Valley Restoration Project
DESCRIPTION:Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre Parents & Citizens Association Incorporated (NVEEC P&C) was established in 2012 with the objective offacilitating the development and further improvement of the School\, and fostering community interest in environmental education within the local and broader community of the Gold Coast. \nIn 2014 NVEEC P&C commenced a community environmental restoration project on a portion of public land in the Numinbah Valley (next to the School of Arts building). The aim of this project is to rehabilitate a weed infested drainage line to an area with improved natural values. Tasks vary on site from session to session and often include elements of planting\, maintenance weeding and mulching. \nSite\nMeeting Point is Numinbah Valley School of Arts carpark. Project site is adjacent to the carpark- a drainage line flowing into the Nerang River. \nTime\n8:30-10:30am. We often have a cuppa tea after! \nBring\nEnclosed shoes\, gloves\, water bottle\, hat\, sunscreen\, insect repellent. \nHave a look at this video which outlines the original condition of the site\, the goals of the project and the works undertaken was produced in 2016.

SUMMARY:Waterbugs
DESCRIPTION:The Waterbug Gold Coast program is a new program which is coordinated by The Gold Coast Catchment Association and supported by the City of Gold Coast – Catchment Management Unit. The program is a collaboration with Gecko and the Coomera River Catchment Group. We are fortunate to now have the Nerang River Keepers on board as well and we will be heading out for our first community sessions at Crane Creek. \nThe program raises community and government awareness in the Gold Coast region and aims to distribute information on waterways health\, waterbug identification\, diversity and composition\, trends and impacts. We will also monitor the water quality at the same time! \nThe program is open to the wider community and we really encourage everyone to participate and learn new skills whilst collecting vital data! We aim to collaborate with more community groups to be able to expand the program in the next year. \nThe session will be facilitated by Steven Gill from the Coomera River Catchment Group in conjuction with The Nerang River Keepers. \nPlease make sure to register to get all the updates on locations and times!
