DESCRIPTION:The Carrara Floodplain Landcare Group was established in 2014 and is partnered with the Natural Areas Management Unit under the Beaches to Bushland Volunteer Landcare Program. The group assists with the restoration of City of Gold Coast-managed Carrara Floodplain Park. \nThe group’s activities consist of environmental weed control and planting native plant species where required. \nAims\n\nencourage active community involvement and ownership\ncontrol environmental weed species impacting the site and promote the expansion of native canopy cover\nprovide learning opportunities for local landholders in “ecological restoration”\nimprove and increase habitat opportunities for native wildlife\nrestore and improve the structure of the existing native vegetation within the park using revegetation and assisted regeneration techniques\nstrengthen relationships in the community\n\nThe group meet on the third Saturday of the month from February to November. \nTime: 8am – 10am\nLocation: Cairngorm Street\, Carrara\nWhat to bring: Sturdy shoes\, long sleeve shirts\, pants\, sunscreen\, hat and some water. DESCRIPTION:PlatypusWatch needs your help to learn more about where platypus live and where they are disappearing. PlatypusWatch is a community-based program and involves members of the community undertaking platypus surveys\, promoting and recording platypus sightings and assessing platypus habitats. This information is used to identify what education and conservation actions are needed to help protect this mammal. \nThe platypus is an amazing semi-aquatic mammal that is endemic to Eastern Australia and Tasmania. It is primarily nocturnal\, living in creeks and rivers from cold highlands areas to tropical rainforests. Unfortunately platypus numbers appear to be declining due to habitat disruption\, water extraction\, pollution of waterways and illegal capture. \nJoin us on our Surveys in March and April 2019 where we hopefully see some youngsters explore our waterways. \nMake sure to email us on gcplatypus@gmail.com to register and get all the information for our surveys as well as the compulsory induction!

DESCRIPTION:The Tarrabora Reserve Bushcare Group was established on 2 March 1999 and assists with controlling environmental weeds and the revegetation of native plant species. The group is partnered with the Natural Areas Management Unit (NAMU) under the Beaches to Bushland Volunteer Landcare Program. \nTarrabora Reserve is a popular parkland located on Currumbin Creek at Palm Beach. It was saved from development in the 1960s and 70s by locals and a group known as the Currumbin Estuary Protection Committee\, which has since changed its name to Friends of Currumbin. \nThe Reserve is under the management of the City of Gold Coast (NAMU) and looked after by the Tarrabora Reserve Bushcare Group along with the Friends of Currumbin\, who continue to carry out the role of protecting the Currumbin area. \nDates: second Saturday of the month from February to November\nTime: 8am – 10am\nPlace: Tarrabora Reserve\, Currumbin\nWhat to bring: Sturdy shoes\, long sleeve shirt\, pants\, sunscreen\, hat and some water.

DESCRIPTION:The Hinterland Regional Park Bushcare Group was established in April 1999. It was the first official bushcare group partnered with the Natural Areas Management Unit under the Beaches to Bushland Volunteer Landcare Program. \nThe Gold Coast’s beautiful natural environment allows us to enjoy a lifestyle like no other city. By volunteering in a bushcare group you can help protect\, maintain and enhance our natural areas and make a difference to your local natural environment. It’s also a chance to meet like-minded people and learn new skills that can be applied in your own backyard. \nThe group assists with the restoration of the City of Gold Coast managed Hinterland Regional Park located in Mudgeeraba. The site is approximately 72 hectares in size and is bordered by Mudgeeraba Creek\, Bonogin Creek and Hardys Road. It is home to over 158 bird species including the glossy black cockatoo and a range of other native animals including the endangered Richmond Birdwing butterfly. \nThe group’s activities include controlling environmental weeds and revegetation projects. The group has contributed to planting over 70\,000 native species and has held large community planting days with schools and organisations such as Green Corps. \nVolunteer days are on the first Saturday of the month from February to December. \nTime: 8am – 10am\nPlace: Hinterland Regional Park\, Hardys Road\, Mudgeeraba\nWhat to bring: Sturdy shoes\, long sleeve shirts\, pants\, sunscreen\, hat and some water. \nFor more information please contact the Natural Areas Management Unit on 07 5581 1537 or email namu@goldcoast.qld.gov.au.

SUMMARY:Elanora Wetlands Bushcare Group
DESCRIPTION:The Elanora Bushcare Group was established on 6 February 2000 and is partnered with the Natural Areas Management Unit under the Beaches to Bushland Volunteer Restoration program. The group assists with the restoration of the Elanora Wetlands Reserve and Schusters Park located at the end of Tallebudgera Drive\, Elanora. The group’s activities include weed control and revegetation and\, since starting the group\, has planted over 800 native trees\, shrubs\, vines and grasses that have provided habitat opportunities for local wildlife. The group has also hosted numerous school and business groups who have assisted with their efforts. \nThe area is home to over 60 different species of birds with other animals such as native sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) and common tree snakes (Dendrelaphis punctulastus) being seen on regular occasions. A butterfly-friendly garden has been established within the wetlands area and can be seen by walking along the trail\, with some interpretive signage along the way. \nThe group has received nominations for two special bushcare awards. The first was in 2002\, when it was a finalist in The Shade and Spade Committee’s Queensland Arbour Day Awards in which the group were runners up. The second was in 2006\, when the group was a finalist in the Gold Coast Australia Day Awards Ceremony and was presented with the overall Environment Achievement Award. \nVolunteer days are on the first Tuesday of the month from February to November. \nTimes: 8am – 10am\nPlace: Schuster Park\, Heather Street\, Tallebudgera or Elanora Wetlands\, Palm Beach\nWhat to bring: Sturdy shoes\, long sleeve shirts and pants\, sunscreen\, hat and some water. \nFor more information contact our Natural Areas Management Unit on 07 5581 1537.
