SUMMARY:Currumbin Nestbox Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A hands-on community workshop where you’ll be able to build your own free nestbox to take home! \n\n\n\n\nJoin Watergum for a hands-on Currumbin Nest Box Workshop at the beautiful Currumbin Valley Environmental Education Centre in the heart of the Currumbin Valley. \nThe day starts with a guided tour of the Centre’s beautiful campus. Known for its focus on environmental education\, sustainability\, and connecting people with nature\, the Centre offers a range of wildlife-friendly spaces. Participants will explore the grounds and discover how the site incorporates habitat-friendly design\, natural resource management\, and outdoor learning areas to support biodiversity and inspire environmental stewardship in students and the wider community. \nThe practical workshop\, led by Hollow Log Homes\, will include an engaging discussion on the importance of wildlife habitat and how landholders can help native species through nest boxes and other habitat structures. Participants will then get hands-on\, building their own nest box (or similar habitat structure) to take home and install on their property. \nThis project is funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust under the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program\, with the support of Watergum Community.

SUMMARY:Southern Pink Underwing Moth Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Southern Pink Underwing Moth (Phyllodes imperialis smithersi) is a rare and threatened species found in subtropical regions of Australia. Its survival depends on the presence of its host plant\, the Carronia Vine (Carronia multisepalea)\, which provides essential food and habitat for the moth’s larvae. Carronia Vine is an important native climbing plant\, and conservation efforts include weed control\, planting of Carronia\, and monitoring its distribution to support the moth’s recovery. \nThis workshop aims to raise awareness\, provide hands-on experience\, and involve the community in protecting this unique species and its habitat. Below is a guide to the day’s schedule\, including key sessions and speakers. \n\nIntroductions by Watergum and Healthy Land & Water\nScreening of Back from the Brink: Southern Pink Underwing Moth\nDiscussions led by Watergum on the topic of the Carronia Vine\nInsight into Garima by Anthony Molyneux\nPropgation talk and demonstration led by Michelle Benson from Native Plants\nMorning Tea\nPlant ID walk & talk with Mitch Greives from NV Environmental\n\nThis project is delivered in partnership with Healthy Land & Water and Barung Landcare\, under funding from the Australian Government Saving Native Species Program.

SUMMARY:Waterbug Survey Currumbin
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to assess the health of our waterways by sampling and collecting data on waterbug species! \nYou may not have noticed before\, but our rivers and creeks are home to hundreds of different species of waterbugs. Some of these waterbugs are extremely sensitive to pollution. When we sample water\, we test for the presence or absence of these waterbugs to let us know whether a waterway is healthy or not. \nThis activity is suitable for both children and adults of all ages. \nYou will learn how to collect waterbug samples correctly before collecting and identifying the different species. \nThe data collected is nationally recognised and is shared with our local councils to provide up-to-date information about the health of our waterways. \nThis event is proudly supported by the City of Gold Coast\, Catchment and Citizen Science Grants Program.
