You will also be taught how to correctly identify a platypus and the proper methodology for platypus surveying. \n  \nOnce you have completed this induction you can jopin the PlatypusWatch family and join us in surveying platypus twice annually accross the Gold Coast\, as well contributing to our daily survey research for the Platypus365 Project. \n  \nThis event will take place online\, please register your attendance so we know how many to expect and we hope to see you at one of our surveys soon! \n  \nPlatypusWatch is supported and funded by the City of Gold Coast.

SUMMARY:Waterbug Sampling - Tallebudgera
DESCRIPTION:Waterbug Sampling – Tallebudgera\n\n\nLearn how to assess the health of our waterways by sampling and collecting data on waterbug species. \nYou may not have noticed before\, but our rivers and creeks are home to hundreds of different species of waterbugs. SUMMARY:PlatypusWatch Landholder Workshop - Maudsland
DESCRIPTION:*Please note there is a date change from the original proposed date\, this event will be held on July 27th\n\n\nPlatypusWatch Landholder Workshop \nEvery year\, hundreds of Gold Coast volunteers brave the early mornings to survey platypus and collect valuable data on population dispersal. In order to provide a comprehensive overview of their presence\, we need additional help from private property owners who boarder the waterways. We fear that platypus populations are in trouble and need to better understand where they are thriving and where they are not. \nThis workshop will teach you all about the unique platypus\, how to survey them from your own property and about how the data you collect will be used. Morning tea will be provided and we will finish with a guided walk along the creek to observe prime platypus habitat. \nPlatypusWatch surveying acts as an early warning system to populations in distress. Our increased surveying efforts will help to prevent another extinction event as was sadly witnessed in Tallebudgera Creek. \nGet involved now and help to protect the Gold Coast’s most treasured inhabitants. \nWorkshop Agenda: \n\nPresentation by Watergum\n\n– Overview of Platypus: History\, biology\, habitat\, breeding \n– Discussion on threats and conservation efforts \n– Guidance on Platypus identification \n– Introduction to PlatypusWatch surveying and sighting reports \n\nMorning/Afternoon Tea\n\n\nPresentation by City of Gold Coast\n\n– Insights on property care to support platypus habitat\, including riverbank erosion control\, regeneration\, weed control \n\nGuided Walk Along the Creek\n\n– Opportunity to observe and identify platypus habitat \n– Identification of potential threats such as erosion\, weed infestation \nThis workshop is supported and funded by the City of Gold Coast

SUMMARY:Holding Tight - Linking Springbrook and Lamington National Park
DESCRIPTION:Tree planting to continue the Gold Coast Biggest Tree Planting Day efforts and help link Springbrook NP with Lamington NP\n\n\n \nThe Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre P&C (NVEEC P&C) is excited to continue its landscape scale restoration project “Numinbah-Holding Tight”\, which aims to improve the resilience of species and ecosystems in the Numinbah Valley\, and surrounding area\, by creating a green corridor linking Springbrook and Lamington National Park. \n \nThis project was initially started in August 2019\, at the Seqwater/Watergum- Gold Coast Biggest Tree Planting Day\, where 15\,000 native tube stock were planted by the community on old dairy pasture in the Numinbah Valley. \n \nIn Sept 2020\, NVEEC P&C became involved through funding from Landcare Australia\, where this volunteer group commenced monthly field days to encourage on-going community participation in this important project. \n \nToday\, NVEEC P&C with the help from community volunteers and high school students\, have since added a further 14\,000 native tube stock to the project and we are looking to grow this number even further in 2024! \n \nIf you’re looking to get your hands dirty\, meet others and contribute in a positive way to the local environment the NVEEC P&C field days are the perfect opportunity to volunteer for a couple of hours every quarter in 2024. \n \nAfterwards\, everyone is welcome to stay and enjoy a cuppa which includes our famous morning tea! \n \nChildren are welcome to attend\, they must be supervised by an adult at all times to ensure their safety and quality of work is maintained e.g. plants correctly planted and watered as per instructions. \n \nPlease be prepared for each field day by bringing the following: \n• Appropriate clothing for working in the bush (long pants and sleeves recommended) \n• Hat \n• Full water bottle \n• Enclosed shoes \n• Positive attitude! \n \nAddress: Gold Coast Model Flying Club- Nerang Murwillumbah Road (type this into Google). If coming from Nerang the entrance is just past the Springbrook turnoff. \n \nParking: Look out for signs and follow instructions at entrance gate. All weather road\, parking will be at Model Flying Club facility. \n \nPlease note by registering your attendance this helps with planning and record keeping for each field day.

SUMMARY:Nestbox Building
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to construct your own nest box that you can then put up at home in your garden?\n\n\n Although most of us live in urban environments\, we share those spaces with lots of native wildlife! \nMany Australian animals rely on tree hollows for homes and when they aren’t available\, they can find themselves in tricky situations\, becoming trapped in buildings and vulnerable to predators. One solution is to build a hollow replacement in the form of a nest box! \nThis workshop will provide up to 20 families with the wood to construct your own nest box that you can then put up at home in your garden. You will be guided in how to build your nestbox and how to select a suitable location for it where it will be suitable for native wildlife. \nImportant information: \n\nRegistrations required for all attendees – spaces are limited! \nSuitable for ages 6 years and older – parent/guardian supervision required for under 18’s.\nThis event may be cancelled or postponed if the weather conditions aren’t suitable.
