SUMMARY:Holding Tight - Linking Springbrook and Lamington National Park
DESCRIPTION:Tree planting to continue the Gold Coast Biggest Tree Planting Day efforts and help link Springbrook NP with Lamington NP\n\n\n \nThe Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre P&C (NVEEC P&C) is excited to continue its landscape scale restoration project “Numinbah-Holding Tight”\, which aims to improve the resilience of species and ecosystems in the Numinbah Valley\, and surrounding area\, by creating a green corridor linking Springbrook and Lamington National Park. \n \nThis project was initially started in August 2019\, at the Seqwater/Watergum- Gold Coast Biggest Tree Planting Day\, where 15\,000 native tube stock were planted by the community on old dairy pasture in the Numinbah Valley. \n \nIn Sept 2020\, NVEEC P&C became involved through funding from Landcare Australia\, where this volunteer group commenced monthly field days to encourage on-going community participation in this important project. \n \nToday\, NVEEC P&C with the help from community volunteers and high school students\, have since added a further 14\,000 native tube stock to the project and we are looking to grow this number even further in 2024! \n \nIf you’re looking to get your hands dirty\, meet others and contribute in a positive way to the local environment the NVEEC P&C field days are the perfect opportunity to volunteer for a couple of hours every quarter in 2024. \n \nAfterwards\, everyone is welcome to stay and enjoy a cuppa which includes our famous morning tea! \n \nChildren are welcome to attend\, they must be supervised by an adult at all times to ensure their safety and quality of work is maintained e.g. plants correctly planted and watered as per instructions. \n \nPlease be prepared for each field day by bringing the following: \n• Appropriate clothing for working in the bush (long pants and sleeves recommended) \n• Hat \n• Full water bottle \n• Enclosed shoes \n• Positive attitude! \n \nAddress: Gold Coast Model Flying Club- Nerang Murwillumbah Road (type this into Google). If coming from Nerang the entrance is just past the Springbrook turnoff. \n \nParking: Look out for signs and follow instructions at entrance gate. All weather road\, parking will be at Model Flying Club facility. \n \nPlease note by registering your attendance this helps with planning and record keeping for each field day.

DESCRIPTION:Waterbug Sampling\n\n\nLearn how to assess the health of our waterways by foraging for waterbugs! \nYou may not have noticed before\, but our rivers and creeks are home to hundreds of different species of waterbugs. \nThis activity is suitable for both children and adults\, help us collect a sample and see which species we can find. \nSome waterbugs are very sensitive to pollution and so through their presence or absence\, we are able to determine whether a particular waterway is healthy or not. \nThe data collected is nationally recognised and is shared with our local councils to provide up to date information about the health of our waterways. \nWhat to bring \n*Gum boots/water shoes. No one will be permitted to enter the water without shoes due to safety concerns. \n*Sun protection: Natural non-polluting sunscreen\, wide-brimmed hat\, long sleeves \n*Towel \n*Lots of drinking water \n*Glasses/contact lenses \n*Pen/pencil \nPlease make sure to register to get all the updates on locations and times! SUMMARY:Nestbox Building
DESCRIPTION:Although most of us live in urban environments\, we share those spaces with lots of native wildlife! \nMany Australian animals rely on tree hollows for homes and when they aren’t available\, they can find themselves in tricky situations\, becoming trapped in buildings and vulnerable to predators. One solution is to build a hollow replacement in the form of a nest box! \nThis workshop will provide up to 20 families with the wood to construct your own nest box that you can then put up at home in your garden. You will be guided on how to build your nestbox and how to select a suitable location for it where it will be suitable for native wildlife. \nThis workshop is delivered by Watergum and Crestmead Mens shed as part of the City of Logan’s Environmental Events and Activities program and Citizen Science initiatives.

DESCRIPTION:Learn about the different creatures that inhabit Logan Waterways in this interactive outdoor event! \nOur waterways are home to some unique and wonderful creatures that not only rely on us for survival but they rely on each other as they move up the food chain. This event will help you start at the bottom of the food chain and work your way up to learn how everything fits together! \nWe’ll start by foraging for waterbugs and collecting a sample to see what species we can find. Next we’ll go on a treasure hunt to search for different waterway animal species\, we’ll have to find them all to complete our healthy ecosystem! DESCRIPTION:Join our online induction so you can join our Platypus survey program!\n\n\nWatergum PlatypusWatch – Gold Coast Induction and Education \nCome along and we will teach you everything you need to know about this unique species\, then those who want to can enrol onto our PlatypusWatch survey program. \nThe topics we will cover are: \n• Platypus history \n• The unique biology of the platypus \n• Life cycle and breeding \n• Food and habitat \n• Threats to platypus \n• Watergum’s PlatypusWatch survey program. \nWatergum’s PlatypusWatch is a citizen science program that has monitored platypus populations for the past 13 years. Community volunteers help to collect vital data on platypus populations and habitat by going out into the environment to search for platypus\, with all sightings and observations being reported to council and added to national databases. \nNow more than ever\, our local platypus need your help. With increased urbanisation and natural disasters\, platypus populations are under threat.
