SUMMARY:Elanora Wetlands Bushcare Group
DESCRIPTION:The Elanora Bushcare Group was established on 6 February 2000 and is partnered with the Natural Areas Management Unit under the Beaches to Bushland Volunteer Restoration program. The group assists with the restoration of the Elanora Wetlands Reserve and Schusters Park located at the end of Tallebudgera Drive\, Elanora. The group’s activities include weed control and revegetation and\, since starting the group\, has planted over 800 native trees\, shrubs\, vines and grasses that have provided habitat opportunities for local wildlife. The group has also hosted numerous school and business groups who have assisted with their efforts. \nThe area is home to over 60 different species of birds with other animals such as native sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) and common tree snakes (Dendrelaphis punctulastus) being seen on regular occasions. A butterfly-friendly garden has been established within the wetlands area and can be seen by walking along the trail\, with some interpretive signage along the way. \nThe group has received nominations for two special bushcare awards. The first was in 2002\, when it was a finalist in The Shade and Spade Committee’s Queensland Arbour Day Awards in which the group were runners up. The second was in 2006\, when the group was a finalist in the Gold Coast Australia Day Awards Ceremony and was presented with the overall Environment Achievement Award. \nVolunteer days are on the first Tuesday of the month from February to November. \nTimes: 8am – 10am\nPlace: Schuster Park\, Heather Street\, Tallebudgera or Elanora Wetlands\, Palm Beach\nWhat to bring: Sturdy shoes\, long sleeve shirts and pants\, sunscreen\, hat and some water. \nFor more information contact our Natural Areas Management Unit on 07 5581 1537.

SUMMARY:Water Quality - Coomera
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to assess the health of our waterways through water quality sampling! \nSeize the opportunity to use our state of the art water quality probe to record vital data regarding our local water composition. Water pH\, oxygen levels\, temperature and other parameters can have a huge impact on the quality of our waterways and on the creatures that depend on them for survival. The Water Quality program collects monthly readings at select locations in order to assess the changing quality of our waterways throughout the year. We also rely on our volunteers to record observational details that could have an effect on the water quality reading such as current and recent weather conditions\, visible rubbish and pollution\, weeds\, site usage or disturbance\, and wildlife sightings. \nThe data collected is shared with local councils and highlights those areas where action needs to be taken! If you are passionate about the environment and keen to contribute to its preservation\, we encourage you to come along and meet like-minded people while learning new skills and collecting vital data! \nCoordinated by The Gold Coast Catchment Association and supported by the City of Gold Coast – Catchment Management Unit\, the Water Quality Monitoring program is a collaborative effort between Gecko\, Coomera River Catchment Group\, Nerang River Keepers\, Austinville Landcare & Somerset College \nWe are heading out with our Coomera Crew! Meeting location to be confirmed. Meeting time is at 09:00 AM\, location to be confirmed. Please be aware that samples are not necessarily taken at the meeting place and you may be required to drive to nearby locations. \nWhat to bring \n\nGum boots/water shoes. SUMMARY:Platypus Watch Survey - Albert River
DESCRIPTION:PlatypusWatch – To register\, please email gcplatypus@gmail.com! \nPlatypusWatch needs your help! Come along to one of our surveys and help us to spot platypus! It is imperative that we learn more about platypus and their habitat so that we can work out why they are disappearing from some of our waterways. PlatypusWatch is community-science at its best and relies on an army of passionate volunteers to assess platypus habitat and record platypus sightings during our twice-annual surveys along the rivers and creeks of the Gold Coast. The data is part of a wider platypus support network and is used to assess the health of our local platypus populations\, as well as being shared with our local councils \nThe platypus is one of the most amazingly unique creatures in the world being a duck-billed\, otter-footed egg-laying\, semi-aquatic mammal that is endemic to Eastern Australia and Tasmania. Primarily nocturnal\, they live in specialised habitats along creeks and rivers in an array of different climates\,  from cold highlands to tropical rainforests. \nUnfortunately platypus numbers appear to be in decline as they face more dangers from vehicles\, dogs and rubbish such as yabby nets\, fishing tackle and plastic. Their habitat is also under threat and is being decimated by farming\, city expansion\, water extraction\, pollution and illegal capture. \nJoin us at one of our surveys and contribute to the platypus survival effort! As a community\, let’s work together to save one of the world’s most unique animals! \nDue to the popularity of PlatypusWatch\, registrations must be completed by email. Please email gcplatypus@gmail.com and get all the information for our surveys as well as the compulsory induction! \n

SUMMARY:Platypus Watch Survey - Coomera
