DESCRIPTION:NOTE – 6PM QLD TIME\, 7PM NSW TIME! \nThis is a Tweed focussed event\, but anyone can watch the video and join in the fun! \nLet’s work together with your community to control cane toads! \nCane toads are highly toxic presenting significant danger to pets\, wildlife and agriculture. The plague is spreading at an alarming rate\, and we need to work together to reduce their numbers and reclaim our properties and natural areas. \nLog on to Facebook and join the toad busting fun from your own home! \nDue to Covid restrictions we have adapted our first toad busting event to be online. The event will air on the Watergum Facebook page at 7pm on October 7th and will teach you everything you need to know about cane toads\, toad busting and native frog ID and our invasive species coordinators will be online to answer your questions. After that\, the competition begins! \nDon’t worry if you miss the 7pm event. The video will remain online for you to watch at your leisure. However\, you might just have to wait a bit longer to get your queries answered.\nFrom 7pm on Thursday the 7th of October\, you will have 1 week to collect and log as many cane toads as you can from your property and surrounding area. Compete on your own or with your family\, there are some fun prises up for the team who busts the most toads! \nThe online event will begin at 7:00pm where an informative toad busting video will go live. From 7:30pm – 8:00pm Watergum officers will still be online to interact with participants and answer any questions that may come up. Participants may begin toad busting in their backyard or neighbourhood any time after viewing the video. \nEquipment you will need – To join in the competition\, you will need;\n– a bucket with a lid\n– some gloves\n– a torch\n– a pick-up stick (optional) \nYou will also need some designated toad tubs for your fridge and freezer to humanely euthanise your toads.\nLet’s make a difference\, let’s impact cane toads! \nThis event is funded by Tweed Shire Council for the purpose of community cane toad control.\nPlease ensure that you are aware of current Covid-19 restrictions. \nFor more information contact canetoads@watergum.org

SUMMARY:Waterbugs Survey
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to assess the health of our waterways by foraging for waterbugs!\n\n\nYou may not have noticed before\, but our rivers and creeks are home to hundreds of different species of waterbugs! \n Some of these waterbugs are very sensitive to pollution and so through their presence or absence\, we are able to determine whether a particular waterway is healthy or not. \nThe data collected is nationally recognised and is shared with our local councils to provide up to date information about the health of our waterways. Collecting and identifying these waterbugs also happens to be a whole heap of fun! \nThis event is suitable for children 6 and over – parental supervision required. \nPlease remember to bring or wear: \n*Gum boots/water shoes. No one will be permitted to enter the water without shoes due to safety concerns. \n*Sun protection: Natural non-polluting sunscreen\, wide-brimmed hat\, long sleeves \n*Towel \n*Lots of drinking water \n*Glasses/contact lenses*Pen/pencil. \nPlease make sure you are aware of the current Covid-19 restrictions. \nFor more information email watermonitoring@watergum.org and the website: www.watergum.org \nThe workshop is delivered by Watergum as part of the City of Logan’s Environmental Events and Activities Program and citizen science initiatives under the Albert River Vision.

SUMMARY:FrogID - Informing frog research and conservation through citizen science
DESCRIPTION:A rare opportunity to learn from the experts at FrogID!\n\n\nWatergum is thrilled to present FrogID: informing frog research and conservation through citizen science. \nSeize this rare opportunity to hear from the experts; everything you need to know about local frog species and also how you can contribute to frog species monitoring through citizen science\, using the addictive FrogID app. \nThis is an online event\, spaces are limited so don’t forget to register! The presentation link will be emailed to you after registration\, prior to the event. \nFrogs play an important role in our environment and provide an indicator of environmental health. Sadly\, frogs are one of the most threatened groups of animals on earth and there is a very real threat that drought\, fire and habitat modification are pushing many frog species even closer to the brink of extinction. To help save them\, we need the help of the community. By using the FrogID app to record frog calls\, Australians can put more frogs on the map and help inform their conservation. \nThis presentation will share our current understanding of Australia’s frogs through FrogID data\, what frog species we are monitoring near you and how to get involved. \n \nPresenter: Gracie Liu | PhD Candidate and FrogID Validator at Australian Museum | Staff profile: https://australian.museum/learn/collections/natural-science/herpetology/herpetology-staff-fellows-and-associates/gracie-liu/ \n \nFor any questions about the FrogID app\, please contact: Nadiah Roslan | Project Coordinator: FrogID | nadiah.roslan@australian.museum \nhttps://www.frogid.net.au/ \nCane Toad Challenge – Taking on Australia’s Worst Invader

SUMMARY:Gecko Talks: The Iconic Platypus
DESCRIPTION:The Iconic Platypus -Emily Vincent from Watergum speaks at Gecko Talks on 24th March\n\n\nThe iconic platypus will be the topic of the next Gecko Talks\, held as usual at Currumbin RSL. “The platypus is one of the most unique species in the world\,” says Emily Vincent of environmental organisation Watergum\, who will be Gecko’s guest speaker. The egg-laying mammal is endemic to the east coast of Australia\, including Tasmania\, populating our freshwater creeks and waterways. The platypus looks like a cross between a duck\, an otter and a beaver and it has some unique features\, like an electro sensory system in their bill that tells them what’s in the water. Emily is a coordinator for Watergum’s PlatypusWatch\, a citizen science surveying program that’s been operating for 12 years on the Gold Coast. During her talk Emily will reveal not so known details of the animal’s biology\, lifestyle and habitat as well as introducing you to the PlatypusWatch program.\n \n“We are concerned that the platypus is quietly disappearing and so it is important to monitor our local populations. We have already seen them disappear from one of the Gold Coast’s waterways and we want to prevent this from happening anywhere else.”\n \nWatergum is welcoming people from the public to come forward to become a surveyor for PlatypusWatch. “At present the platypus’ conservation status is not regarded as concerning in Queensland. Together with the community\, this is something we are working to change \,” Emily adds.

SUMMARY:NaturallyGC Hotel for Frogs (kids workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Join our free NaturallyGC workshop\n\n\nThis is a kids workshop suitable for ages 6 to 15. \nNative frogs are a favourite visitor of Australian gardens and come in many different shapes and sizes. Australia hosts 240 species of native frogs with 39 of them calling the Gold Coast home! It doesn’t matter where you are on the Gold Coast or how big your outdoor space is\, you will surely have frogs lurking nearby. Native frogs need our help as they are struggling to find suitable habitat to live and breed. Urban development has greatly reduced their habitat and what is left is often taken over by cane toads. This workshop includes an introductory presentation that will help you to identify your hopping friends and learn all about their specific needs followed by a ‘How to build your own frog hotel’ activity!   \nPlease note you won’t be making you’re own frog hotel to take home with you\, we will create one together which will stay at the gardens. \n Bookings are required for further details. \nBook a spot for all children and adults attending \nPresented by Watergum.

SUMMARY:Waterbugs - Cedar Creek
DESCRIPTION:Water Quality Testing\n\n\nLearn how to assess the health of our waterways by foraging for waterbugs! \nYou may not have noticed before\, but our rivers and creeks are home to hundreds of different species of waterbugs! Some of these waterbugs are very sensitive to pollution and so through their presence or absence\, we are able to determine whether a particular waterway is healthy or not. The data collected is nationally recognised and is shared with our local councils to provide up to date information about the health of our waterways. Collecting and identifying these waterbugs also happens to be a whole heap of fun! \nCoordinated by Watergum and supported by Logan City Council. \nWe are heading out to Chardon Bridge Park from 9-11am (1 Chardon Bridge Road\, Cedar Creek). \nWhat to bring \nGum boots/water shoes. No one will be permitted to enter the water without shoes due to safety concerns. We have waders for the adults. \nSun protection: Natural non-polluting sunscreen\, wide-brimmed hat\, long sleeves \nTowel \nLots of drinking water \nGlasses/contact lenses \nPen/pencil \nPlease make sure to register to get all the updates on locations and times! This program is suitable for all age levels. \nWebsite: www.watergum.org \nEmail: watermonitoring@watergum.org \nPlease make sure that you’re aware of current covid-19 restrictions: https://www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19
