SUMMARY:Hinterland Regional Park Bushcare Group
DESCRIPTION:The Hinterland Regional Park Bushcare Group was established in April 1999. It was the first official bushcare group partnered with the Natural Areas Management Unit under the Beaches to Bushland Volunteer Landcare Program. \nThe Gold Coast’s beautiful natural environment allows us to enjoy a lifestyle like no other city. By volunteering in a bushcare group you can help protect\, maintain and enhance our natural areas and make a difference to your local natural environment. It’s also a chance to meet like-minded people and learn new skills that can be applied in your own backyard. \nThe group assists with the restoration of the City of Gold Coast managed Hinterland Regional Park located in Mudgeeraba. The site is approximately 72 hectares in size and is bordered by Mudgeeraba Creek\, Bonogin Creek and Hardys Road. It is home to over 158 bird species including the glossy black cockatoo and a range of other native animals including the endangered Richmond Birdwing butterfly. \nThe group’s activities include controlling environmental weeds and revegetation projects. The group has contributed to planting over 70\,000 native species and has held large community planting days with schools and organisations such as Green Corps. \nVolunteer days are on the first Saturday of the month from February to December. \nTime: 8am – 10am\nPlace: Hinterland Regional Park\, Hardys Road\, Mudgeeraba\nWhat to bring: Sturdy shoes\, long sleeve shirts\, pants\, sunscreen\, hat and some water. \nFor more information please contact the Natural Areas Management Unit on 07 5581 1537 or email namu@goldcoast.qld.gov.au.

SUMMARY:Waterbugs &Water Quality - Currumbin
DESCRIPTION:Waterbug & Water Quality Survey\n\n\n\nLearn how to assess the health of our waterways by foraging for waterbugs!\n \nYou may not have noticed before\, but our rivers and creeks are home to hundreds of different species of waterbugs! Some of these waterbugs are very sensitive to pollution and so through their presence or absence\, we are able to determine whether a particular waterway is healthy or not. The data collected is nationally recognised and is shared with our local councils to provide up to date information about the health of our waterways. Collecting and identifying these waterbugs also happens to be a whole heap of fun!\n \nCome along to one of our surveys and learn how to collect a waterbug sample\, and how to sift through\, collect and identify dozens of different waterbugs. You will also learn how to score each bug on the pollution sensitivity scale to arrive at your overall water quality rating. We promise you\, you will be amazed at the quantity and the diversity of waterbugs that exist in our waterways!\n \nAlso\, seize the opportunity to use our state of the art water quality probe to record vital data regarding our local water composition! Water pH\, oxygen levels\, temperature and other parameters can have a huge impact on the quality of our waterways which the Water Quality program assesses through monthly readings. We also rely on our volunteers to record observational details that could effect waterbug numbers or the water quality reading such as current and recent weather conditions\, visible rubbish and pollution\, weeds\, site usage or disturbance\, and wildlife sightings.\n \n\nCoordinated by The Gold Coast Catchment Association and supported by the City of Gold Coast (Catchment Management Unit)\, the Water Quality Monitoring program is a collaborative effort between Gecko\, Coomera River Catchment Group\, Nerang River Keepers\, Austinville Landcare & Somerset College\n \n\nWe are heading out to our Southern sites with the Gecko crew! Please meet us at Long Tan Park from 9-11am (Bains Road\, Currumbin Valley).\n \n\nWhat to bring\n \n*Gum boots/water shoes. No one will be permitted to enter the water without shoes due to safety concerns.\n \n*Sun protection: Natural non-polluting sunscreen\, wide-brimmed hat\, long sleeves\n \n*Towel\n \n*Lots of drinking water\n \n*Glasses/contact lenses\n \n*Pen/pencil\n \nPlease make sure to register to get all the updates on locations and times! This program is suitable for all age levels.\n \n\nWebsite: www.goldcoastcatchments.org/citizenscience\n \nEmail: info@watergum.org
