SUMMARY:Austinville Landcare Group
DESCRIPTION:The Austinville Landcare Group was established in November 2005 and is partnered with the Natural Areas Management Unit under the Beaches to Bushland\, Volunteer Landcare Program. The group assists with the restoration of City-managed Austinville Community Park and Austinville Conservation Area along the upper reaches of Mudgeeraba Creek. The group’s activities consist of environmental weed control and planting native riparian species where required. \nThe Austinville Valley is located between Mudgeeraba and Springbrook and was previously known for banana farming but is now known for its beautiful rainforests and stunning creek lines.  The group’s main focus is on the riparian areas along Mudgeeraba Creek with activities including weed control and revegetation where required. \nThe vegetation along these sections of Mudgeeraba Creek is classed as Regional Ecosystem type 12.3.2. This vegetation type is characterised by the presence of the canopy tree\, Flooded Gum. This ‘of concern’ community is found in alluvial flats amongst hilly terrain\, in the southern half of the city where there is more rainfall. \nWorking bees are on the last Sunday of the month from February to November. \nTime: 8am – 10am\nPlace: Austinville Conservation Area\, 621 Austinville Road and Austinville Community Park\, Staghorn Drive. Please call to prior to confirm location.\nWhat to bring: Sturdy shoes\, long sleeve shirt\, pants\, sunscreen\, hat and some water. Gloves are compulsory. \nFor more information\, please contact the Natural Areas Management Unit on 07 5581 1537 or namu@goldcoast.qld.gov.au

SUMMARY:Seagrass Survey - South Stradbroke Island Site 1
DESCRIPTION:Seagrass Survey – South Stradbroke Island\n\n\n\nWe need volunteers with a passion for environmental science and the preservation of our coastal environments to assist us in our vital work monitoring seagrass meadows on the Gold Coast! \nSeagrass is an important food source for many of our iconic ocean creatures such as dugongs\, turtles and seahorses! It is also an ecosystem engineer balancing heavy-metals\, pollutants and nutrients levels and stabilising sediment to prevent coastal erosion. We are alarmed at the rate of disappearance of seagrass globally and we are witnessing here on the Gold Coast. Seagrass-Watch has been designed by experts and is part of a global network of citizen scientists dedicated to collecting valuable data and we need your help! \nBy coming to one of our seagrass surveys you will have a lot of fun\, as well as contributing towards the collection of important scientific data. We need hardy volunteers who don’t mind getting wet and are looking to meet some like-minded people while learning some new skills! We encourage university students\, outdoor enthusiasts\, adventurous friends and families. Just be sure to contact us is you would like to bring children so that we can confirm whether a particular site is suitable for small people. \nBring your enthusiasm\, appropriate clothing and water shoes for the event and be prepared to have a lot of laughs and make new friends. We hope to see you there! \nGold Coast Seagrass is an established program in partnership with the City of Gold Coast. The Seagrass Gold Coast program raises community and government awareness in the Gold Coast region and aims to distribute information on seagrass populations\, trends\, sea turtle and seahorse presence! \nWe are heading out to South Stradbroke Island on the 27th of October for another splash around. \nMeeting time is at 11.45 AM at the Labrador boat ram \nThis program is hosted by the Gold Coast Catchment Association and supported by the City of Gold Coast. \nwww.goldcoastcatchments.org/citizenscience \nwww.facebook.com/gcseagrass \ngcseagrass@gmail.com
