SUMMARY:Austinville Landcare Group
DESCRIPTION:The Austinville Landcare Group was established in November 2005 and is partnered with the Natural Areas Management Unit under the Beaches to Bushland\, Volunteer Landcare Program. The group assists with the restoration of City-managed Austinville Community Park and Austinville Conservation Area along the upper reaches of Mudgeeraba Creek. The group’s activities consist of environmental weed control and planting native riparian species where required. \nThe Austinville Valley is located between Mudgeeraba and Springbrook and was previously known for banana farming but is now known for its beautiful rainforests and stunning creek lines.  The group’s main focus is on the riparian areas along Mudgeeraba Creek with activities including weed control and revegetation where required. \nThe vegetation along these sections of Mudgeeraba Creek is classed as Regional Ecosystem type 12.3.2. This vegetation type is characterised by the presence of the canopy tree\, Flooded Gum. This ‘of concern’ community is found in alluvial flats amongst hilly terrain\, in the southern half of the city where there is more rainfall. \nWorking bees are on the last Sunday of the month from February to November. \nTime: 8am – 10am\nPlace: Austinville Conservation Area\, 621 Austinville Road and Austinville Community Park\, Staghorn Drive. Please call to prior to confirm location.\nWhat to bring: Sturdy shoes\, long sleeve shirt\, pants\, sunscreen\, hat and some water. Gloves are compulsory. \nFor more information\, please contact the Natural Areas Management Unit on 07 5581 1537 or namu@goldcoast.qld.gov.au

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to assess the health of our waterways through water quality sampling! \nSeize the opportunity to use our state of the art water quality probe to record vital data regarding our local water composition. Water pH\, oxygen levels\, temperature and other parameters can have a huge impact on the quality of our waterways and on the creatures that depend on them for survival. Through the collection of monthly readings\, the Water Quality program assesses the changing quality of our waterways throughout the year. We also rely on our volunteers to record observational details that may effect the water quality such as current and recent weather conditions\, visible rubbish and pollution\, weeds\, site usage or disturbance\, and wildlife sightings. \nThe data collected is shared with local councils and highlights those areas where action needs to be taken! If you are passionate about the environment and keen to contribute to its preservation\, we encourage you to come along and meet like-minded people while learning new skills and collecting vital data! \nCoordinated by The Gold Coast Catchment Association and supported by the City of Gold Coast (Catchment Management Unit)\, the Water Quality Monitoring program is a collaborative effort between Gecko\, Coomera River Catchment Group\, Nerang River Keepers\, Austinville Landcare & Somerset College \nWe are heading out with our Austinville Crew! Meeting time is at 09:00am  at the meeting place\, 621 Austinville Rd. Please be aware that samples are not necessarily taken at the meeting place and you may be required to drive to nearby locations. \nWhat to bring \n\nGum boots/water shoes.
