Now it’s time to introduce the Watergum Cane Toads Program!
The program uses a revolutionary method of cane toad control that uses the toad’s own toxins against them. Those involved have two tasks; collecting adult cane toads on their properties through toad busting activities and the trapping of tadpoles in tadpole traps using lures made from cane toad paratoid glands. Perseverance with these activities has succeeded in nearly eradicating toads from people’s properties. When the cane toads retreat, native animals flourish, water quality improves and property owners and their pets get their gardens back! We want to see frogs like this juvenile Green tree frog return to our gardens!
What we will cover in Part 2 of the course
The do’s and don’t of tadpole trapping
Pay close attention and make sure you fully understand how the process works prior to using your lures. If done right, tadpole trapping is an extremely effective method of cane toad control. However, if done incorrectly it can be completely ineffective and you will waste your precious lures.
Toad busting
We will discuss the importance of toad busting activities to reduce cane toad numbers on your properties and in your local areas. Frozen toad donations are also vital to the continuation of the program as we need their glands to enable us to continue producing tadpole lures.
We will explain methods, recommend useful equipment and suggest group activities that can increase your catch potential.
Toad control measures for all life stages
There are different methods of cane toad control for each life stage and we will discuss some of the more successful methods available.
