PlatypusWatch also collects incidental platypus sightings which help us to get a bigger picture of platypus populations and occasionally identify family groups that were previously unknown to us. Incidental platypus sightings are also very important to help us learn where platypus might be struggling or where they are in serious trouble. During the droughts of 2019 it was the incidental reporting of struggling platypus that contributed to the council declaring the Gold Coast as being officially in a state of drought and finally prevented unauthorised pumping of water from creeks and rivers.
If you ever see a platypus, PLEASE report it to us using the form linked below! If you manage to get a photo or a video, even better! This data is kept private from the general public and is only shared with councils to help them identify areas that need to be protected and improved.
